THE FUTURE!

So I found this info-graphic on how technology is going to progress in the next 30 years or so and I am pretty happy with what it predicts. The future is going to be awesome but it is going to turn everything upside down.

The playing field will become level, it will be impossible for anybody to have any advantage over another. Let me explain, as construction gets more advanced things will be easier to build. Eventually someday we should be able to convert plentiful molecules and maybe even elements into the more useful ones. So the annoying greenhouse gases and the garbage we produce will be converted literally into gold.

This makes everything physical easy to make, all that you need is the blueprint to ‘print’ the awesome product you want and energy to do so (Because your garbage can be used as the construction material). Now as the info graphic shows things like the Enernet which will make energy easy to get a hold of, if photovoltaic glass and paint exists then theoretically every artificial construction could produce electricity. Then if you need energy to do something (Build anything) you can just borrow it from your neighbours who may be creating a surplus.

Also if online piracy has proved to everyone how hard it is to ‘protect’ information, the blueprints of anything worthwhile will be available on the internet.

So any material can be used to make anything, energy will be plentiful to utilise these materials, and you will probably be able to download blueprints (Of say an awesome car) for free off the internet.

The future is awesome!

It’s always time to learn

Since graduating I have filled my time by pulling apart an engine, watching many youtube and Khan Academy videos on Chemisty, Biology and History, reading almost non-stop and hitting the gym really hard.

Which lead to me being told that I was still in ‘study mode’, I got told that I have spent my whole life in an established education system and it was time to make the transition into working life.

I really didn’t like this comment, I have nothing against working but the idea of giving up the self enforced study seems like death to me. I made a mental note that if the workforce ever caused me stop trying to learn new things that I would quit my job immediately.

There are way too many people who are set in their own ways and are not open to new ideas because they have become complacent (Because full time work gives the illusion of being ‘good enough’).

That is why I am putting a conscience effort against it.

Don’t Stop Learning

They reckon the day you stop learning is the day you die.

I love that saying however I believe there is more to it. Most people experience a period of rapid learning during their youth but then they plateau. They become set in their own ways and close themselves off to learning more.

I think this happens when we start working in our long-term career path. Yes the younger mind is always going to be more open to new ideas (A trait that I fear losing) but once we start getting paid for your skills the mindset of “I am good enough” kicks in.

This is a promise that I want to make to myself: NEVER let my learning plateau. Always find new ideas and perspectives. Do Not let a day go by without making a conscious effort into expanding myself (Be it my mind, body, soul, horizon, whatever).

Don’t let the lazy mindset takeover

Google is the omnipotent being of our society

In the past if you had a question that needed answering, or a problem that needed solving, you would turn to the smartest person you could find and ask them. This smart person had a unique form of power, a power that would stem from being the ‘go to’ person. This person (or entity) had the ability to shape the community with the responses and answers they gave.

Some example are: Religion, schools and universities.. BUT the entity that that has been given the most of this incredible power is Google.com.

Any question imaginable can be typed into their search and answers are given immediately; this is amazing for people searching for knowledge because everything has been placed at their fingertips (if you are like me, learning for yourself is so much sweeter than being shown how to do something).

However one must be aware of the entity abusing the power given to them. Google returns results based on their idea of relevance, and often this is based off generalisations. This gives answers that don’t challenge the status quo. So all new knowledge you gained from googling is not going to be world changing.

This is why sometimes calling up your old expert is the better option than simply googling for an answer. Seeking unconventional viewpoints often inspires innovation and unfortunately google results will never do this..

But even with this shortcoming it is amazing what can be achieved when the worlds knowledge is easily accessed.

Choosing to live in the rat race

University students often have to live off tiny budgets, this is mostly because they don’t work and the little money they do get goes towards alcohol. Living like this sucks but it is not too difficult, here are some foods that are dirt cheap (Note: not very healthy)

Simple, now living healthy is a little more expensive but you can’t have everything (Super cheap or healthy).

See, Cheap Living is Easy

I could work 20 hours a week on the minimum wage in Australia and be able to comfortably afford to eat healthily, sleep in my nice bed, and play my favourite sports. All the good things.

Anyway it got me thinking, there are blogs about living cheap and getting your finances in order but they don’t really explain what to do with the excess money/time you get. Getting your finances in order is important, but there is more to life than simply living and being able to comfortably afford food and shelter.

However higher purposes need a solid foundation to work from, saving the world is impossible if one is too focused on ensuring that basic life necessities are around. So yeah financial education is important as a foundation for self actualisation.

The problem is that many people are slaves to their money, they confuse luxuries for necessities and have to work longer to cover theses “necessities”. In this situation a person isn’t free, they work hard and sacrifice to afford short lasting consumerist pleasures (The Rat Race).

Overcoming consumerism and materialism is the modern-day method of liberation. Once these burdens are shed working less is possible, allowing time to dedicate to better things. But no-one is going to tell you what these better things are, you have to do some heavy thinking to decide what you are going to pursue. Many people would rather work than be faced with this (They rationalise it as boring).

So much effort these days is allocated to addressing the issue of the rat race, but I don’t think it is the problem. Everyone is born free before slipping into a life of bad habits. Living on the cheap is easy, overcoming materialism is easy, Freeing yourself from the rat race is easy. But Living free is hard, it’s boring, it requires deep thinking and soul-searching.

So we choose the rat race, we consciously know that our lives aren’t complete but our subconscious is happy that it doesn’t have to deal with the pressures associated with freedom.

And these pressures? They are self inflicted fears of failure; with the open doors there is nothing stopping us from becoming great. But the possible humiliation is too terrifying.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.’ We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.  – Marianne Williamson

Difference in Brain Power

A Disturbing Thought

Although this whole video is really interesting, the last part is really what I want to talk about. Human beings are pretty arrogant, I mean we are programmed that way. We have this concept of life being infinitely complex and that sentient robots are an impossibility, but I really think its our own arrogance that promotes this belief.

Computers can replicate simple life forms. I believe I could make a program that behaves like an ant really easily. More advanced scientists could probably program small mammals. Take the driver-less cars that google is making, they have a ‘brain’ that can put a mouse to shame.

Is it really that inconceivable that this progress (Which has been accelerating steadily over the years) won’t keep accelerating until a robot can outsmart a human?

Is the mental processing ability between a mouse and a human really that distant (It is but is it unachievable?).

The standard argument is that it took 50 years for flight to progress from the Wright Brothers plane to Jet Planes. If we assume these driver-less cars to be a metaphorical Kitty Hawk, what the hell will be the Jet Planes we get in 50 years time?

We really aren’t much more special than the other animals on this planet; as robots become smarter we will realise it.

Quantitative stuff

A high school graduation speech where students get told they are not special. The one quote that stood out for me is:

even if you’re one in a million, on a planet of 6.8 billion that means there are nearly 7,000 people just like you

This is a very humbling idea, there is never a time where you should become complacent because somewhere in this world is someone who is equally skilled but has committed themselves to doing better.

It also compares you to the statistical anomalies in the world’s population. Most of the time you just look around at your peers and compare yourself to them. But the truth is that you share the same tiny blue planet as these greats and history will only remember the greats.

Remember that guy that gave up? Neither does anyone else

Guaranteed in this population is someone who was born in the ideal conditions, is superior genetically, is incredibly hard-working, and has seized every opportunity thrown their way. This person is certain to do great things. They will change the world for the better and will go down in history. Da Vinci and Einstein are examples of this.

Statistically there will always be the person that is  1 : 6,700,000,000 and that person will always leave a mark on the world.

Even the person coming 100th will do great things.

When you start comparing yourself to these people you immediately realise you need to lift your game.

High and Low Forms of Pleasure

Just finished reading Ikigai. I found that it is a book with awesome ideas but it was definitely preaching to the choir in my case. Anyway this one part on High and Low forms of pleasure got me (quote from the blog post itself):

I do differentiate personally between “low happinesses” and “high happinesses” – this isn’t ultra-scientific, just how I personally think about it. Low happinesses like contentment, sensory pleasure, etc… I don’t think those are important to pursue.

High happinesses – triumph, camaraderie, epiphany, wisdom – those I think are worth pursuing.

Genius

One of my mates keeps saying that heroin dumps the same hormone you get when you reach orgasm.. except at 100x the dosage. I guess that saying affected me differently to what he meant; I took it that if you care so much on getting laid why not just do drugs instead (Note: I love sex, I think putting heaps of effort into getting it is stupid). This concept in Ikigai perfectly explains why, it is such a low form of pleasure.

I love achieving goals. I love progressing at the gym, both in the mirror and on paper. I love that feeling when you catch an amazing wave. I love solving a difficult problems. I love learning. These are higher forms of pleasure.

And the funniest thing about higher forms of pleasure is that they shape you into an even better person.

2nd Note: Don’t do drugs

Into the Abyss

In a months time our accommodation contract ends and at that stage I’ll need to find a new place to live. However before that can happen I need some form of real employment. Also the next few weeks are the exam period and it is unlikely that I’m going to concern myself with proper job and house searching (half-hearted looking at best).

So at this stage its like looking forward into my future and seeing only a huge cliff, I have no idea where I’m going to end up or what I’m going to be doing.

I can’t tell if I like the feeling or hate it.. Hopefully I find a way so I don’t drive off that cliff and plunge into the abyss.

Go-Pro’s

While on the topic of change in our society I would like to point out another innovation that may cause great shifts in the way society works.

This is the exponential increase in the availability of digital images (Specifically film) and the information generated from the footage. The GoPro camera is what got me thinking about this.

Everyone these days is into photography, you can get a good camera relatively cheap and can take as many photo’s as you can possibly want. These inevitably end up on the internet. But all this was a result of the change from analogue to digital photography.

That was the first step.

Next we got cheap and small video camera’s (The GoPro). I know these are pretty popular at the moment (Heaps of my friends have them and I probably will soon), but once everyone starts using them all the time there will be a flood of footage on the internet of everything imaginable (Think about camera’s being used in a driver-less car; where-ever there is a car there will be recorded footage).

And the last step, computational methods designed for interpreting this wealth of data. Google became famous for computing textual data; once computing power and artificial intelligence develop sufficiently to interpret video then there will be a change on a level equal to that caused by Google’s search engine.

It is hard to imagine computing power becoming so powerful but once everything is being recorded a wealth of knowledge will arise from the computers interpreting this data.

It does give rise to some privacy concerns and issues about a “Nanny-state” but individual data will definitely be lost in the ocean of information. So no-body will really know what you are doing unless they really want to (Which the FBI can do now days anyway).

It’s hard to know whether this is good or bad.. Generation Y will probably struggle with  the change but the next generation will be all over it and calling us the obsolete generation.
