Motivation Trick

I try to do a little of my programming tutorial every day but a problem I face is that more often than not I don’t feel like it, especially if the day before I got stuck on something and gave up.

By accident I found a way to overcome the dread regarding my tutorials and change it into excitement. All I do is read about computing/programming!

See I’ll sit there and have no motivation to boot up my computer, but lying on the couch, relaxing and reading? Yes Please!

I’ll open my book (At the moment – Understanding the Linux Kernel) and read for a bit. It doesn’t take long before my mind goes into logical, problem solving mode and I crave the work.

Then I have no problem continuing my tutorial, meaning I can pump out some solid study every day almost.

This probably works with everything, read about going to the gym to psych up for the gym for example.

Little things throwing you off

It sometimes seems like the world is out to stop you from achieving. You can be working with something, enjoying it and making good progress, then suddenly something so insignificant throws you off.

This happened recently with one of my programming tutorials, as usual you learn more if you follow along with these things but my computer wasn’t playing the game. It turns out because I was using windows virtually one step would completely fail, because of this I have felt discouraged and really lost the momentum I had.

The only method I know that can combat this is to keep pushing through. Hopefully my passion for it comes back sooner rather than later.

IT and Software Dev

I have always had a keen interest in computing, as a kid pulling apart toys and building things with lego evolved into skills in this area. Although I don’t study computer science I make an effort to read and program as often as I feel motivated to do so. Recently I had a project in website design and I followed the youtube channel and taught myself a heap to do with HTML and CSS.

A few months back I worked through dive into Python, MySQL, PHP plus a little of Javascript.

Also I read up on TCP/IP.

The following goals I have to teach myself in development are:

  • Further knowledge in Python
  • Assembly
  • Graphics programming
  • Android Development (Java)
Normally I can pump through a large amount of material in these areas if I manage to motivate myself. This motivation to do Hours of reading comes in bursts but as the war of art (If programming is viewed as a creative pursuit) states, the way to overcome these demons is to simply be consistent. If I simply sit down and force myself the motivation will eventually come.
I am really interested in this as having the technical knowledge is complementary in becoming a technical founder/co-founder of a start-up.
Now for the motivation…
